Michael Craig-Martin Biography

Dublin (Ireland), 1941

Michael Craig-Martin studied at Yale University School of Art and Architecture in the early 1960s, but has spent most of his working life in Great Britain. A pioneer in the world of conceptual art, his colourful paintings and murals can be seen in such museums as MoMA in New York and the Pompidou in Paris. In 1995 he curated Drawing the Line, an exhibition of drawings from pre-history to the present day held at the Whitechapel Art Gallery (and touring). His work was included in the 1996 exhibition Un siecle de sculpture anglaise at the Jeu de Paume in Paris. Michael Craig-Martin has had five solo shows at Waddington Galleries in London. Most recently he has created major wallpainting installations at the Kunstverein Hannover (1998) and at the Wurttembergischer Kunstverein Stuttgart (1999). In 1998 he represented Great Britain at the XXIV Bienal de Sao Paulo in Brazil. He was appointed a Trustee of the Tate Gallery, London, from 1989 to 1999.

A Professor of Fine Art at Goldsmith College, he was major influence on the Brit Pack including Damien Hurst and Gary Hume.
