Les Kinney Biography

I've painted pictures all my life. After graduating from Emily Carr College of Art with a degree in Film/Video and after several years of experimentation in these mediums, I found myself, back in the canvas and paint. I work primarily in acrylic on canvas, with pieces that range from "18 * "22 to "36 * "42. My earlier influences were the surrealists and muralists. My work has a stronger impressionistic feel now. I'm now working with the subliminal forms within nature

Artist's Statement

I’ve spent most of my life on the west coast of Canada. It’s where I live now and is obviously a strong influence on my current work. Expressing myself through imagery has been constant and important. Throughout this journey, I’ve explored various media, including silkscreen, film, video, computer art and a little web design. It is, however, in painting that I find myself in my natural element. My work is about our perception and the beauty within natural form. I’ve always had a keen interest in sketching, drawing, and painting. In particular, painting has become the primary medium, with which I portray this love. My belief is that art can enhance the value of life and even give us a greater knowledge of self. Towards this end I’ve focused my creative energies. I paint to express my moods, feelings, and perceptions. It is also an exploration of perception, the point in our brain, where the subconscious influences what we see. The vibrancy of color and the stroke of the brush can be as important as the image itself. I work primarily in acrylics, as it allows me a certain spontaneity and speed. Over time my style has evolved from surrealism through impressionism to a kind of simplistic realism
