Note: There is a painting (oil on canvas) of the same name in the collection of the Museum of France. We have not seen the work but it must be different from our present aquatint. Picabia followed many of the great art movements of his time and is remarkable in the number of stylistic changes throughout a long and illustrious career. At the time this print was made he was greatly influenced by the Impressionists and has been a friend of Sisley whose work this in some ways resembles. He held a show of his impressionist works at the Salon d’Automnee and the Salon des Independants in 1903 alongside works of Paul Gauguin and Paul Cezanne. Picabia, it is known , spent time in the area this work illustrates and made a number of prints relating to local scenes. There was one group of 5 works in black and white and a later group, from which this is an example, published by George Petit in 1906/7. Amongst these were : “Coucher de soleil sur Port-de-Bouc” , “Les Martigues” , “Le Pons a Montigny” , “Effets de brouillard” . This group was the subject of an exhibition at Petit’s gallery in 1909. The impressionist period was to end for Picabia shortly after this. Picabia was influenced greatly by the the cubists and was to join their ranks.
