Masson, André

André Masson
(Balagny, 1896 – Paris, 1987)

French painter, printmaker and sculptor, and widely reckoned to be a key figure in the Surrealist movement.

Trained at the Ecole de Beaux-Arts, Paris, he initially worked in a Cubist style. After joining the Surrealist movement, in 1924, he began working in a unique style combining Surrealism with Abstraction. His favourite subject included: pain, eroticism and violence. After moving to the US, during the World War II, he worked in a style that combined Surrealism with American Abstract Expressionism.
