Malevitch, Kasimir

Kasimir Malevitch
(Kiev 1878 - Leningrad 1935)

Russian painter and one of the pioneers of geometric abstract art.

Trained at the School of Art at Kiev and later at the School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture in Moscow, he initially was painting in Post-Impressionist style and gradually transitioned to Cubism and Futurism.

His most famous works are those created after 1913, gradually shifting from traditional Abstract to Geometric abstraction. Works like: Supremacist Composition (Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam), Yellow Parallelogram on White (Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam), Suprematist Composition: White on White (MOMA, New York), etc.

He is widely credited for influencing abstract art across Central Europe.
