González, Julio

Julio González
(Barcelona, 1876-1942)

Spanish sculptor and painter, also regarded as a pioneer of welded iron as a medium of sculpture.

A close friend of Picasso, most of his early work consists of paintings, but he is primarily renowned for his latter work in the sculptural medium, particularly in abstract or semi-abstract styles. On of his most familiar pieces is Montserrat ( Stedelijk Mueseum, Amersterdam ), which depicts a woman with a child, in commemoration of the Spanish civil war.
