Epstein, Sir Jacob

Sir Jacob Epstein
(New York, 1880- 1959)

American-born British painter and sculptor, known primarily for his sculptures, in the classical and primitive styles.

Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts and Académie Julian, he first came to limelight with his tomb of Oscar Wilde, which shocked the public-at-large with its image of a naked angel. The artwork was initially banned untile a bronze plaque was used to cover the angel´s sexual organs.

The artist continued to stay in the limelight with several major public commissions across important locations in the UK.
