Auerbach, Frank

Frank Auerbach
Berlin, 1931

German-born, British painter in FIGURATIVE STYLE.

Auerbach is one of the painters who has been instrumental in defining The School of London. He is a figurative painter, with a never-ending interest in the relationship between his own art and that of art history's greatest painters, yet at the same time he remains a distinct individualist with his own form of expression. His special working method and his localized, almost monomaniacal choice of subjects has made him an almost mythical figure in today's art.

The Artist was trained at the following art schools:

Hampstead Garden Suburb Institute;

Borough Polytechnic under David Bomberg (1947 to 1948);

St Martin’s School of Art (1948–52); and

Royal College of Art.

His first exhibition was held at the Beaux Arts Gallery, London, in 1956.
