Modernismo: ¨Catalan Art Nouveau¨

Modernismo or Modernisme (1888-1911) - unrelated to Modernism - refers to the Art Nouveau movement in Catalan Spain related to other contemporary artistic, musical and intellectual movements like Decadence, Nietzschean Vitalism, and Parnassianism. Modernismo emerged from various sources - the Arts and Crafts movement, the Pre-Raphaelite movement, the Aesthetic movement and the Gothic revival.

Salient characteristics of Modernismo are asymmetrical, dramatic curves and colorful architectural decoration. This aesthetic also informed Catalan sculpture, painting and decorative arts, ceramics, textiles, furniture, and more. Many of the most notable Modernismo works by architects Antoni Gaudí, Louis Domenech i Montaner and Josep Puig i Cadafalch are located in Barcelona.
