Artist's Statement

Canadian artist Rose Wark currently lives in Montreal. As a child, Rose had the good fortune to be able to spend days and months wandering in the wild places of Canada, and it has made a deep and lasting impression on her. Several months of travel in Asia and Europe have also been very inspiring. She enjoys painting and drawing figures and portraits, but specializes in landscapes. At the moment she is working on a forest series using not only paint but also plant matter found in the forest. There are leaves and stems embedded in and placed on top of layers of opaque and transparent paint. Always playing with the line between reality and the representation of reality there are real objects placed beside highly resolved paintings of objects. Rose likes to give the viewer of her paintings a feeling of being at that place. There are scenes from the temperate rainforests of Haida Gwaii on the western coast of Canada, the eastern deciduous forests of North America, the boreal and the mountains of Kyushu in Japan. Rose hopes to continue this series in the future with scenes of other types of forests.
