Detailed Description

Reference: Bloch 1108, Cramer 125
Note: This particular example was published to illustrate volume IV of the Mourlot catalogue raisonee. In his memoirs the printer Fernand Mourlot writes “I went to Mougins to show Picasso the mock up of volume IV of the 4 volume edition of “Picasso Lithographs”. Our friend , as ever in good form, examined every page of the book with interest. Pinned to a drawing board, the cover illustration (the present work) that I had come for was waiting for me. The frontispiece, however: “The Artist and his model had not been planned: it was the result of Picasso’s talent and our diplomacy. When I returned the next day the cover and the frontispiece had been successfully transferred. The usual careful work was rewarded by excellent results”. This and its companion piece show two faces in the form of cut-out masks and recalls the drypoint made by the artist in 1957 for “Picasso derriere le masque.
