Wiebke Dreyer Biography

Hamburg born emerging German artist Wiebke Dreyer creates luminous and vibrant abstract works, combining elements of light and shadow. Her time spent on the Mediterranean has notably influenced her works. The city of Barcelona inspired her to explore her use of color and to incorporate elements of its striking architecture.

The base of my paintings is a combination of a childhood in Northern Germany with long dark winters and the significant time spent studying in Barcelona, with all the power and impact of Mediterranean light. It was there that I started my work about colour and light.

Travelling to Morocco introduced the use of texture to my artistic practice. Sand and pigments are at the heart of the ?desert paintings? and the following ?earth series?, drawn from the experiences of some time spent in the Sahara desert and afterwards from walks in my local park, whose paths show resemblance to the sandy surfaces of the desert.

Contrasting those natural colours are the artificial and strong colours of my latest ?stage paintings?, inspired by my time as artist in residence of a music festival in Germany and a lot of time at the Royal Opera, London, after a newly discovered passion for opera, especially Wagner.?
