Robert Indiana Artwork Details

Detailed Description

Note 1 : Robert Indiana first conceived the idea of LOVE during the Vietnam war and his work became a symbol of peace. Indiana made a number of different colour combinations at the time and more have followed later. The first LOVE Sculpture was carved out of a block of solid aluminium, highly unpolished, which had been made for a show in 1966. Since then LOVE has become a cultural icon and been used extensively throughout the Art World and media. The image has been used on T-shirts, mugs, rugs, sculptures and posters. The 330 million United States postal stamps issued in the 1970’s are one of the more popular examples of the great appeal of this iconic image. Note 2 : Verso is a certificate bearing a printed signature of the artist which reads as follows: “Hand Tufting is an ancient technique. Until the advent of synthetic and natural latex, which is used to bind the reverse, hand tufting was previously only done in loop format. For the Robert Indiana’s Love Rugs we carefully select a yarn, using only 100” Indian wool. We select the best Indian Wool available. A two ply yarn spun at 2.5 turns per inch is used to achieve the true intensity of the pop Art Colours of Robert Indiana. We then wash the yarn in several natural baths and finally in a bleach bath. the yarn is then hand dried using exclusively chrome dyes, after which it is washed, dried in the sun and spun into cones. At this point we create a full Love -sized template. the template is laid down on stretched, mounted cotton canvas and ink wash is applied to bring the Love on the screen to life. The rufters arrive en masse and the tufting process begins. Tufting is done by hand using a hooking device, powered solely by hand in a process similar to a shuttle hooker use for thousands of years. Tufters follow the pattern and switch colours according to the design. Once the entire design is tufted by hand a preliminary inspection takes place to confirm the quality of the craftsmanship. At this point the reverse side of the rug is coated with synthetic latex. Depending upon the weather, the latex requires up to 48 hours to dry. Once dry the art is curt from the frame and edging is fixed by hand. At this point another team of craftsmen arrives to do the finishing work. The face of the rug is clipped by hand. Once this is completed, the hand carving begins. The lines of the Love are hand carved with a simple scissors in the hands of a Master Carver. the rug then undergoes another inspection and upon passing inspection is given a final finish and a final wash. Subsequently the rug dries and undergoes a final inspection after which it is labelled and packed. All our Love rugs are made in the holy city of Varanasi. We practice respect for the environment and our workers in all stages of our production and do not use child labour. Love rugs should be cleaned professionally only and are not suitable for machine wash” (John Gilber : master Rug Maker and dry Chromist)” Size: 24” x 24” Inches ( 60 x 60 cms Edition: Size Unknown
