Detailed Description

The earth spins continuously. The stars appear to pass overhead, but actually it is the earth’s movement that creates this phenomenon. In the northern hemisphere one star appears to remain still, Polaris (the north star), because it is directly above the axis upon which the earth spins. The earth’s movement makes some stars appear to move faster than others, depending on their position in relation to the north star.
Working at night and using a specially adapted turntable that houses my camera, I record the passing of the stars overhead. Each star makes a mark on the negative either as an arc or as a circle, depending on the length of the exposure. Using multiple exposures to build a layer of marks I construct photographs from the passage of time, each titled by the constellations they identify. The exposures are between five and thirty five minutes long.
