What is a mixed-media technique?

The term “mixed media” refers to an technique of using two or more artistic media, such as drawing, painting and collage, that are combined to create a single composition.

While each medium is versatile in the hands of a talented artist, adding additional media can result in an artwork full of texture and visually exciting elements. While some mixed media artists might use a modest combination of oil and acrylic, printmaking and collage, or drawing and photography, others take the technique a step further, embedding found objects in to the surface of an artwork, adding sculptural dimensions to a previously two-dimensional artwork. Sometimes the mixed media are noticeably pronounced, while in other artworks they might appear completely blended together at first glance.

Mixing media offers artists endless possibilities for creative expression. Here are some examples from PicassoMio artists.
