Framing is a matter of personal choice. Many contemporary artworks can be hung unframed. Collectors often leave paintings unframed when they have 1-inch or thicker stretcher bars that are gallery-wrapped (canvas wrapped around support with no visible nails or staples).
On the other hand, some collectors choose to frame paintings with frames that complement the artwork, or frames that create an interesting contrast—for example an abstract painting with a baroque frame.
