Jean Cocteau Biography

1889-1963

FRENCH painter, printmaker, movie director and writer, Jean Cocteau's artworks are greatly influenced by his talent and knowledge of other fields, such as theatre and poetry.

Widely regarded as one of the most extravagant figures in the avant-garde art of his time, he was a close friend of artists, such as, PICASSO and MODIGLIANI.

In filmmaking, his best known movies include, LA BELLE ET LA BETE, LE SANG DÃ?N POETE, ORPHEE and TESTAMENT DÃ?RPHÃ?E.

The artist died of a heart attack at age 74 at his chateau in Milly-la-Foret, France on October 11, 1963 after hearing the news of the death of his close friend, EDITH PIAF, the famous French singer.
