Georges Rouault Biography

Georges Rouault

Paris, France, 1871 ? 1958

A renowned French painter and printmaker, Georges Henri Rouault is considered both a Fauvist and Expressionist.

He started his arts education while working as apprentice to a glass painter and restorer. He later studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, and under Gustave Moreau. His friendship with Henri Matisse, Albert Marquet, Henri Manguin, and Charles Camoin led him to the Fauvist movement, though his work always embodied a more spontaneous style. His highly emotional depictions of grotesque figures is said to have inspired the Expressionist painters.
