Le Chat et l'Oiseau by Anton Rooskens

Anton Rooskens Biography

Anton Rooskens

Griendsveen, 1906 - Amsterdam, Netherlands, 1976

An established Dutch painter, Anton Rooskens was largely self-taught. His early landscape work was highly influenced by Van Gogh, while his later paintings show the influence of African sculpture and sculptures of ancestors from New Guinea.

His paintings are marked by a personal language of magic signs in black, yellow, blue, and red in which masks, shields, and images of gods entwine in a jumble of spontaneously painted areas of color and line.
