Unpacking Architecture - Origami 02 by Lan My Do

Lan My Do Biography

Thailand

Established Thai - American architect Lan My Do creates architecturally based photo collages challenging the ideas of habitable space.

Born in Thailand to Vietnamese parents, Lan was brought to the United States at an early age and raised in both Cullman, Alabama and Miami, Florida. The confluence of many cultures and geographies have had a great effect on her life and work. Being involved in the arts almost all her life, Lan attended a magnet high school dedicated to design and architecture, an experience that solidified her commitment to architecture. She received a BS in Architecture and a Minor in Architectural History in 2000 from the University of Virginia. Upon graduating, Lan began working for a small design-build firm in SoHo. In 2006, Lan received her Masters in Architecture at Columbia University in New York City. She is currently working on renovating and converting a land marked bank building in New Yrok, where she is currently based.

In her series, ?Unpacking Architecture?, Lan creates photo collages made from ?origami patterns juxtaposed onto photos of ?slots? in and around New York City. The ?slots? of the city were considered residual spaces, abandoned spaces, slivers, edges and undesirable spaces. With one of the highest real estate markets in the world, the idea of space is constantly a shifting concept in this city. These origami collages aim to challenge the ideas of habitable space in New York City by introducing collapsible, transportable, and parasitic structures that are inserted into slots of the city. ?
