Country Kites by Truong Dinh Hao

Truong Dinh Hao Biography

Vietnam, 1937

A mid-career Vietnamese artist, Truong Dinh Hao paints with gouache on newspaper. He pares his compositions down to their necessary elements, at times approaching cubism, and uses simple colors and strong lines to depict life in the peaceful midland region of Vietnam. His paintings express a deep sentiment for and appreciation of the land as well as the customs and daily habits of his people.

Dinh Hao says he came to painting accidentally while working for the family of artist Pham Viet Song. Observing this artist he learned that painting was his passion, and earned money by working as a model before eventually graduating from the Hanoi School of Fine Art in 1970.
