Cubism

Cubism

Cubism was started by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque in Paris inspiring many other movements in music and literature.

The first branch of cubism was known as analytic cubism from 1908-1912. Natural forms were analyzed and reduced to basic geometric forms including cylinders, spheres, and cones.

The second branch and main branch of cubism was known as synthetic cubism, developed between 1912 and 1919. Juan Gris, a Spanish cubist, was another major leader in synthetic cubism. Synthetic cubism was less an analysis of objects rather more a fusion of several objects together. Newspaper clippings were common in this artwork, often considered the first appearance of collage as fine art.
