Gregg Kreutz is amazing. This book was very helpful. Its obvious when you see the book he is a 'master' painter. Sample paintings are beautiful and instructions very helpful. Wish I had this book years ago.
Excellent guide for serious beginners,

It is basically a beginner's guide to oil painting, but it is also quite suitable for intermediate level. The author explains basic notions which are (hopefully) familiar to every painter and stresses on some fine details later on in his book. As examples he uses his own works, reproaching them critically. For a biginner it should be a simpler (and better) way of learning, I believe, than analizing masterpieces of great painters.
As many readers already pointed out, this book is not going to to tell you anything new if you are an experienced painter. In this case, you should probably avoid buying books titled like "Recognizing What's Gone Wrong and How to Make it Right". If you are an experiences painter and don't know what's wrong with you work, I suggest you should pray to Apollo or some other god, but not hope to find the answer in a book.
Attention kitsch painters: This book will disappoint you too. It does not explain "how to paint" or how to achieve quick "effects". This book is rather for serious beginners who have made some experience on their own and are interested in arts and not in decorating canvases with paint. If you watch TV, you will probably hate this book.

A very excellent book for anyone who already read all the dry how-to's and technique-centric books. This is the broad strokes of art teaching that's been missing from my self-studies for many years.
Problem solving for oil painters,

The discussion of specific problems such as lack of depth, misplaced shadows, etc. and the illustrations are extremly helpful. The author illustrates what many teachers say. A great book!oil po
