Great Yarmouth, United Kingdom, 1964
Stablished abstract expressionist british artist.
He studied art and desging in the Ipswich College of Arts, in Suffolk. In his first paintings, the nude body constitutes the main subject matter, later it was the landscape which gained importance in his work. The changes of the sea, along with its energy are important elements in his paintings.
He mainly works on the outdoors, in an attempt to "catch the moment", the wild nature that attracts us to those beautiful coastal towns, in the summer or the winter, with rain or sun.
His paintings are about emotions and feelings that the image is capable of evoke. The color, texture and the fast medium become the underlying factors of interpretation in his work.
Some of his work explore these ideas, through experimentation with the color gold and the image of sunflowers. The gold color implies a strong sense of suggestion. The historical implications, the decorative qualities that it possesses, its connections with alchemy, make it a difficult yet fascinating color.
The sunflowers, specially when torn and dry, contain many qualities that allow a continous relation with the image.
