Full instructions for 65 abstract paintings are provided in this guide that urges beginners to plunge right in, learning about composition, theme, and design while they paint. The history of abstract painting and its importance as a means of self-expression are covered in the guide's beginning pages, and each of the paintings that follow conventional step-by-step instruction is replaced with information on composition, imagery, method, materials, and technique, allowing the painter to copy straight from the book—or make changes according to the flow of creativity.

I would highly recommend this book to an aspiring artist/painter as the material is well organized, the paintings are stunningly beautiful, the writing is accessible, and the guided projects will get you started on painting your own abstracts immediately. This is the first book I have purchased where I was able to finally get my paints out and actually start painting. If abstract painting is where your interest lies, then start with this book first.

Some people might enjoy this. It has "recipes" for abstract painting, step by step. If the painting examples looked better I might have been more impressed. It will appeal to painters that like exact directions.

After receiving and drooling over Rethinking Acrylics, this book pales.
No information on how to use today's modern art products - really very limited. Read my review on 'Rethinking Acrylics'.
I found this book very limiting even in it's effort to encourage creativity. Once you have seen the picures - that's pretty much it.

If you are looking for a book which takes you through the nuances of abstract art without curbing your indviduality, this is a book to pick. The language is simple and the supporting illustration helps comprehension. On the flip side, the style of painting remains the same through out, but I still highly recommend this book for artists who are rearing to try abstract art ,but are looking for inspiration and guidance.
