PAINTER AND GRAPHIC ARTIST Mariano Dis Berlin is best known for his contribution to the 'Movida', the vanguard modernist movement linked to Madrid in the 1980s, and his collaborations with filmmaker Pedro Almodovar.
Berlin began by exploring the worlds of fashion, cinema and photography in his work. By the mid 1980s, his themes included airports, trains, cities, landscapes and war. Later, he developed a geometric style employing flat, aggressive colors and ironic use of figurative elements and by the 1990s Berlin´s work became increasingly symbolic, suggesting a labyrinthine sense of form and composition and oriental imagery.
In 1992 Berlin began working on 'Eva' (Eve), a series of collages addressing the representation of women and the point of departure for his future collaborations with Pedro Almodovar with work for films incluting Kika, Atame (Tie me up, Tie me down) and Tacones Lejanos (High Heals).
