Jean Remlinger Biography

France

An established French artist, Jean Remlinger works in a figurative style. His paintings, drawings, and graphic prints are reminiscent of the work of Francis Bacon. His most frequent subject is the lived reality of being human, and fragmented sections of the human body occupy a central place on his canvases.

In his most recent work he creates characters whose faces are absent: erased or covered with masks. These masks are mute faces, devoid of all emotion. Remlinger seems to be interested in a purely aesthetic kind of emotion. His subjects deny any kind of meaning; the figure becomes nothing more than a pretext for the pictorial experience.
