Detailed Description

Edition: Dedicated “a Galanis” and annotated “essai” One of two trial proofs, from an edition of 15. There is one proof struck from the cancelled plate Reference: Duthuit - Matisse 69 Provenance: This is a particularly interesting piece since it was obviously presented by the artist to his friend, Demetrius Galanis who was a painter and etcher. The two of them often played music together. Another etched portrait exists of the same sitter with a three quarter length portrait (D69). In 1914 Matisse had made a series of portarits of his friends and these included a number of artists wives. These includes Mmde Derain, Mme Galanis and Mme Gris A master painter, printmaker, collage artist and sculptor, Matisse ranks among the greatest artists of his time and ours. The Matisse artworks exhibited on PicassoMio exemplify the lightness and joy that typifies so much of Matisse´s work, his use of color and form not only created a landmark in Art History, but remain a great influence on artists to this day. In the words of this great artist: What I dream of is an art of balance, of purity and serenity devoid of troubling matter...like a comforting influence, a mental balm-something like a good armchair in which one rests from physical fatigue. The authenticated art prints by the artist reflect his guiding principle.
