I love it!, 2009-08-16

I was introduced to Gorey by my grandmother who LOVES him. I am not as big a fan of all of his works but I agree with her on Gashlycrumb Tinies. I have even read them to my daughter who is 7 now but was between 2 and 4 when first inoculated with Gorey's macabre humor. She understood after I explained it to her that the horrible happenings in the book weren't real and were similar to some of the more gruesome fairy tales that we had read - some of those Grimm's fairy tales are just that! Anyway, I giggle madly every time I read these and my daughter was never bothered by the content though I am sure many will feel it is inappropriate for young ears. Highly enjoyable and recommended reading.

My daughter collects Edward Gorey books. This is one of her favorites and she needed a new copy. We are so glad to have found his more obscure works on Amazon.

"The Gashlycrumb Tinies" details the gruesome/improbable fates of Amy to Zillah in the style of a childrens' alphabet book. However, it's definitely not for children young enough to be learning the alphabet, unless you want them to have nightmares or to turn out really creepy. That being said, if you have an irreverent and quirky sense of humor, you'll find it hilarious. And, you'll learn to be careful not to be done in by a thug or die of ennui. Really.

I bought three of these books as gifts for three retiring teachers -- they are so funny. An ABC book of odd outcomes for students. Love them.
