Long-recognized as an exceptionally versatile art medium, colored pencil now takes an unprecedented leap forward with new techniques developed by artist Alyona Nickelsen. In this ground-breaking book, the author reveals how new processes have been developed that are natural extensions of basic colored pencil techniques. These include layering, the proper use and advantages of the translucent properties of the medium, as well as her exclusive use of odorless solvents  to achieve rich, luminous color and eye-popping, ultra-realistic effects--all backed up with highly detailed step-by-step demonstrations.

This is my first review which is amazing considering all the books I've ordered from amazon.com. I have recently ordered several colored pencil books and I found the Colored Pencil Painting Bible to be far superior to the others I have recently purchased. I look forward to more from Ms. Nickelsen and have recommended this book to my artist friends. I give it a big thumbs up! Nan Allensworth
Best in its genre!, 2009-09-18

The Colored Pencil Painting Bible is exceptional in its genre. The explanations are clear and detailed. The techniques illustrated and described are more thorough and better presented than I have seen in other drawing books. This book truly teaches how to make realistic renderings with colored pencils. The explanations and illustrations on how to convey light in your work, and bring your piece to life are priceless. I wish I had this book years ago.

I'm a person new to drawing, having admired graphite renderings for years. Colored pencil always seemed to me to be a little pastel-ish in palette for my taste, until I found a couple of books on the subject. This book has been very helpful to me as a person new to drawing in that I've learned what I can do with pencils from really simple exercises like the color chips on page 11. I've also learned how to use different implements for burnishing with OMS. I've seen other authors say not to use it until you are finished, (which I found disconcerting to say the least!) so this was a huge deal to me. I've also learned a great deal about mixing colors and seeing colors in things. Again a big deal to me.

I like the simple way everything is shown and explained. Alyona Nickelsen seems friendly and open for teaching what she has learned and I find that an important attribute. For me this book does what no others have seemed to. It saves my wrist and hands while remaining fluid enough to draw, it teaches me how to use photos better to make a composition, and it shows me how to achieve a look I wanted and couldn't get to without some instruction.

The book is one I'd recommend to people who want to try colored pencil and haven't been to art school or learn science stuff at college instead of art stuff.
