Chryssa Biography

Greek-born American sculptor and painter , best known for her work in LIGHT ART.

She studied at the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere in Paris (1953-4) and at the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco (1954-5).

Her first works were paintings and metal reliefs, such as the Cycladic Book series, 1955-6, depicting Japanese calligraphy and letters from the Roman alphabet, along with other images, such as arrows, as signs of human communication.

Her work, THE GATES TO TIME SQUARE ( Albright Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo ) is regarded as one of the most important American sculptures, of all time.
