Also called P and D, Pattern-and-Decoration movement began in the 1970s, in an effort to challenge the existing taboo in the contemporary art world against the decorative arts. There artists, primarily Americans, were influenced by sophisticated arts and crafts of cultures, including, Islamic, Celtic, Byzantine, and Navajo. The outcome of this movement the recognition of such art styles in the mainstream art world and an introduction of unique mediums, ranging from unstretched fabric and fans to functional art and installations.

Renowned P and D artists include: Brad DAVIS, Tina GIROUARD, Valarie JAUDON, Joyce KOZLOFF, Robert KUSHNER, Kim MACCONNEL, Rodney RIPPS, Miriam SCHAPIRO, Ned SMITH, and Robert ZAKANITCH.
