Charcoal

Charcoal is carbonized wood (as it’s name suggests - charred coal), often willow or vine. Charcoal is most commonly used for drawing on paper. These drawings are notably freer and often less detailed than pencil drawings. Charcoal can be smudged by the artist, obtaining a wide range of grays as well as a deep black.
